Laminate is a very Versatile Flooring.  It can be installed over existing flooring(concrete or wood).  It is a very durable product.  It won't scratch/scuff like hardwood or a vinyl product.  it doesn't hold dirt like what carpet's are known for.  In my experience it outlasts carpet 3 to 1.  It is a great option for high traffic areas.  In my experience installing, Armstrong and Pergo are the best products.  These companies have different grades of laminates.  "Usually" the thicker the better.
